Lindsay Lohan Takes Li’l Sister to Tequila Party

How do you show you’re serious about sobriety?

If you’re Lindsay Lohan, you head to a booze bash at Chateau Marmont—and you bring your underage sister.

The very same day she swore to friends that she plans to stay sober for life (not just during her court-mandated probation), she hit the DeLeón Tequila two-year anniversary party with her 17-year-old sis Ali Lohan in tow:

She was spotted by the bar at Chateau Marmont, hanging with Marilyn Manson, but Lindsay tells us exclusively that she wasn’t ordering cocktails. She was just simply attending the party to support the band.

“I don’t drink,” the troubled actress tells E! News today, adding “I was there to see The Kills because my friend’s in the band.”

Fellow guest Mischa Barton certainly seemed like she was having herself a good time.

“She came down from the party with a glass of wine in hand and tried to get into the locked pool area,” an eyewitness tells me, “At the end of the evening, she had partygoers help her put her outfit together after she returned from the bathroom.”

That’s what friends (or assistants) are for, right?

Battle of the Brits: Piers Morgan Takes on…Hugh Grant?!

leave a comment »

Piers Morgan is at it again: piggybacking on the press of an A-lister in order to boost his own profile.

Oops.

We mean: banning from his show a celebrity who most likely never had any intention of appearing on the program to begin with.

Well, at least Hugh Grant is in good company (hi, Madonna!).

Larry King‘s replacement took to Twitter this morning to lash out against the charming big screen bumbler extraordinaire after Grant appeared on a British radio program and dared to say that—horror of horrors—the paparazzi and tabloid press aren’t exactly doing the Lord’s work.

“The tabloid press is completely unnecessary,” Grant told BBC Radio host Richard Bacon. “We don’t need them, we don’t want them, and the sooner they go out of business the better.”

Hardly a shocking or controversial stance for a celebrity to take, particularly one who’s had his share of ups and downs with the press. And even less surprising as the declaration came in the midst of a conversation about the News of the World‘s Scotland Yard-investigating, lawsuit-resulting, widespread privacy-breaching (and all around creepy) phone hacking scandal. Grant is among those stars allegedly victimized.

But apparently the declaration got Morgan so hot under the collar that he felt the need to tweet this pronouncement:

“Listening to Bishop Hugh Grant telling @richardbacon he wants popular newspapers eradicated. I feel the same about his crap movies.”

If only he would’ve stopped there. It might’ve been point Piers! Instead, proving himself to be the Donald Trump of cable and therefore unable to quit while he was (slightly) ahead, Morgan continued on.

(Now would be a good time to point out that Piers’ anger no doubt stemmed from the fact that before he fashioned himself into a reality show judge and newsman, he was public enemy No. 1 in Britain, as editor of such reputable publications as News of the World and the Daily Mirror.)

“Hugh Grant is now banned, in perpetuity, from @PiersTonight and Life Stories,” Morgan tweeted on, referencing his U.K. interview show. “And anything else I ever do. Tedious little man.”

There’s something tedious about this situation all right, but we don’t think Hugh’s to blame.

In any case, we’re sure Grant will be just crushed to hear that he can’t appear on Morgan’s shows. Just as soon as someone explains to him that they exist.

MORE: Hey, did you hear that Hugh was thisclose to taking over for Charlie Sheen?!

RIM takes aim at work-life balance

leave a comment »

The idea that a BlackBerry is for work and an iPhone or Android-based device is for play is an idea that Research In Motion wants to take on.

The company today announced a new technology called BlackBerry Balance that it says allows users to engage in both personal and work-related activities without compromising the safety of corporate information. For example, IT managers could create policies that will disable the ability for work information to be copied to e-mail accounts or Twitter, as well as lock down corporate data or files, so they cannot be used on personal applications. When an employee leaves the company, IT staff can remotely wipe corporate data from the device without affecting the user’s personal information.

According to RIM, employees won’t know that they can’t perform certain activities while using the smartphone. However, if they attempt to perform an unauthorized activity, the device will display a notification informing them of their inability to do so.

RIM’s BlackBerry Balance is as much about making its smartphones more accessible for personal purposes as it is about security. But it’s not the only thing RIM is doing to ensure better security with its mobile devices.

The company also announced today that it’s planning to launch a new BlackBerry Enterprise Solution option for both smartphones and tablets. The service will deliver a “single Web-based console” for IT administrators to manage devices remotely. The service will allow them to distribute software, lock devices, enforce or reset passwords, and much more.

What’s perhaps most interesting about the service is that it won’t be limited to BlackBerry smartphones or the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. According to RIM, BlackBerry Enterprise Solution will also be available to Android- and iOS-based handsets and tablets, thanks to the company’s pending acquisition of device-management service provider Ubitexx, which it announced today. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

RIM didn’t say when it plans to launch its new BlackBerry Enterprise Solution. BlackBerry Balance, on the other hand, is available to the company’s smartphones running BlackBerry 6. The service is available via BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express.

Blake Shelton Takes Time Off for Miranda Lambert

leave a comment »

Blake Shelton and Miranda LambertBlake Shelton has been going nonstop these last few months with his co-hosting duties for this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards, appearing on NBC’s ‘The Voice,’ touring, recording his new album and planning a wedding.

The reigning CMA Male Vocalist of the Year has waited most of his life for the huge success he’s achieved over the last year, but sometimes a guy — especially one who has worked so hard for a decade — needs a little time-out to recharge his batteries.

“I’m telling you right now, my life is really not fun,” Blake tells The Boot. “And what sucks about it is, I do have a wedding coming up here in just a matter of weeks. Between ‘The Voice,’ and what was a big time-consuming thing: hosting the ACM Awards. Now it’s just like everything you can think of piled up at once.”

After all that, it’s no surprise that his wife-to-be, Miranda Lambert, was feeling a bit neglected. “One day Miranda finally said to me, ‘Where am I? When’s time for me?’ And it was like, ‘God, she’s right!,'” he reveals.

The singing lovebirds are set to tie the knot May 14 with a laid-back shindig in Texas.

Tampa music takes over Ybor – Tbo.com

leave a comment »

TAMPA The Tampa area music scene was out in force in Ybor City Saturday.

At the New World Brewery, the Bay Area Arts and Music Organization (BAAMO) celebrated the release of its latest compilation CD, “Tales of Highways and Low Roads,” with performances by 14 bands.

Four blocks down at Crowbar, Sleepy Vikings performed at the CD release party for its debut album, “The Will Find You Here,” which already has won national acclaim prior to its official release.

The BAAMO show featured plenty of Tampa scene veterans. Robert and Stephen Vessenmeyer fronted Men From Earth in the early ’90s, when Ricky Wilcox was one-third of Deloris Telescope. Saturday, the Vessenmeyer brothers’ Experimental Pilot laid down some catchy roots rock, while Wilcox’s Moonsnakes merged jangle pop and Merseybeat seamlessly.

Younger bands made strong impressions as well. Sons of Hippies generated an enormous sound for a three piece, thanks to Katherine Kelly’s creative use of guitar effects. The band gave the most dynamic performance of the acts I saw at the New World Saturday.

Also impressive were Alexander & the Grapes, playing splintered pop that suggested Pavement in all its jagged, sardonic glory.

The Briar Hill Band sported fine harmonies and a West Coast country-rock sound. Rebekah Pulley & the Reluctant Prophets backed Will Quinlan before performing their own set. Pulley provided some great harmonies for Quinlan and sounded more bluesy than usual during her own set.

Have Gun Will Travel’s set had the floor in front of the stage jam-packed. Possibly the best Americana act in the Tampa area – and there is plenty of competition – the Sarasota band is building a reputation well outside Florida for Matt Burke’s sharp songwriting.

Sleepy Vikings drew a mostly young and particularly enthusiastic crowd to the Crowbar. The band mixed the subtle and the shocking, with multiple guitars and vocals intertwining to hypnotic effect, while frequent rhythmic and tempo shifts – drummer Ryan Slausson was excellent throughout – made sure no one confused it with dream-pop.

It may be impossible to make genuinely original pop music but Sleepy Vikings comes closer than most. Its sound doesn’t conform to the restrictions of any genre; nor did its choice of cover material: Its ghostly take on The Misfits’ “Skulls” managed to make Glenn Danzig’s cartoon horror truly haunting, while Britney Spears’ “Toxic” was funny and disturbing at the same time.
