They may not be as high-profile or glamorous as the Grammys, but to music industry insiders, the ASCAP Pop Awards are just prestigious. Now in their 28th year, the Pop Awards honor popular songwriting; past recipients include such masters of the three-minute ditty as Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and—woah, hold the phone! Is that Adam freakin’ Lambert? Hey, Adam, Satan called—he wants his facial hair back.

Anyhoo, about those awards. This year’s recipients included Rod Stewart (the Founders Awards; it’s a lifetime achievement sorta thing), Band of Horses (the Vanguard Award, ASCAP’s version of the Grammys’ Best New Artist category), Dr. Luke and Max Martin (Songwriters of the Year, for penning Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” and other hits), and Train’s Pat Monahan (Song of the Year, for “Hey, Soul Sister”). Various other celebs and songwriters were on hand to present the awards, including Ke$ha, Ne-Yo and one of the grandaddies of all pop songwriters, Desmond Child (Wikipedia him, you’ll be amazed). And yes, Adam Lambert’s goatee was there. It wasn’t exactly on par with Lady Gaga showing up in an egg, but hey, it’ll have to do.
